(I slightly changed the brief by adding illustration)
The brief
Use typography and
illustration to create a series cover design for Faber Film’s
range of books that reflects Faber and Faber’s long history of
typographic excellence.
Considerations
- The Faber Film range of books covers a variety of genres and
includes screenplays, technique guides and film history books.
- Faber and Faber will be offering this range for sale through the
‘Print on Demand’ service (PoD), which is exactly as it suggests,
copies are made available on the basis of a single customer order.
- The cover designs should reflect the already high profile of Faber’s
film list attracting both film enthusiasts and professionals alike.
Target Audience
Film professionals
Film and media students
People looking for a special gift for a film enthusiast
Mandatory requirements
- ‘Faber Film’ and the faber Logo as a discreet but integral part
of the design
- A series identity that works well in print and online
- A minimum of 3 covers chosen from the titles in the supporting
documents differentiated by colour or layout
- The design should be adaptable across two sizes. B format which is
126mm width x 198mm height (like a standard paperback) and the
larger demy format 135mm width x 216mm height.
Background
The Faber Film list has been at the forefront of Film publishing since
the late seventies. It attracts such names as Scorcese, Lynch, and
Almodavar to write about their own work, as well offering books on film
making by such notables as Mike Figgis and Michael Deeley. Faber also
publishes screenplays to tie in with film releases. Due to the nature of
publishing, it is not possible to keep our whole backlist in print. ‘Print on
Demand’ (PoD) as it’s name suggests, is a way to publish books from the
Faber Film’s much sought after back catalogue in both printed and ebook
form, as required and on demand. The launch and sale of Faber PoD
from our website will attract a lot of media attention as it enables both
students and film lovers to get hold of out of print classics such as the
‘Projections’ series.
Please note: The digital aspects of Print on Demand were used
imaginatively with Faber Finds; a series that combines illustrated
typography and computer generated design to produce covers that are
unique to each title.
Part of what makes PoD possible is the ability to use and reproduce
from design templates. Once a series style is set up, using guidelines,
a printer should have the ability to produce further covers without
compromising on good design.
Using the PoD service for Faber Film’s backlist will be a dynamic way
of creating an essential Faber Film library for anyone who loves film,
bringing back “classic” titles. While most of the traffic would be on line,
many of our top 10 film accounts from National Film Theatre bookshop
to Cornerhouse Manchester would also take copies, therefore the covers
should also stand out well on display.
